Vocab Dance – A Movement Language That Speaks

Vocab Dance is a movement language and pedagogy. It’s a powerful, physical, and expressive language that merges movement, voice, and rhythm to tell stories that resonate. Developed by Alesandra Seutin in 2007, this method embodies a fusion of Black and urban dance forms within a contemporary framework, shaped by her rich cultural heritage and multidisciplinary approach.

Vocab Dance is infused with the physicality, pulse, and textures of South and West African and diasporic dance forms, alongside the spirit of hip-hop and the depth of poetry and music. It invites dancers to embody movement from the inside out—grounded, fluid, and bold.

This approach champions cross-disciplinary exploration, pushing the boundaries of how dance is created, performed, and experienced. It engages the body and voice in unison, encouraging dancers to move, vocalise, and express with full presence.

A Vocab Dance session is dynamic and immersive, demanding both physical and emotional engagement. Whether accompanied by live musicians or recorded compositions, participants are guided to explore physical, musical and verbal articulation, while embracing their individuality and cultural influences.

Vocab Dance is a method of storytelling—one that provokes thought, sparks conversation, and empowers dancers to express their truth with vigour and authenticity. It is dance that speaks.
